Nobody likes ‘hard’.
‘Easy’ is better.
‘Challenging’ is questionable.
‘Just give it to me’ is pretty much the top choice these days.
When I was a kid, it wasn’t a question of do we like ‘hard’ or not… you just did what you had to do. I’m grateful I grew up in that culture cuz life throws some curve balls!! I don’t know how I would have gotten through the last couple of decades had I been averse to the idea of anything being challenging, difficult or overwhelming.
Having said that, do I like a nice ‘gimme’ every now and then? Absolutely!! But often times, the greatest gains result from The Long Game…not gimmes.
When I was pregnant with my first daughter, I remember going to get my haircut and the stylist trying to explain what labor felt like.
She said, “You feel your abdomen tighten with pain, and tighten some more….and then tighten even more!!! And then, JUST when you think you cannot possibly handle any more pain……….it gets worse.”
Being naive to the process, I thought it couldn’t possibly be *that* bad.
It was.
I went for about 32 hours trying to manage the pain without meds. As my body was not progressing at all, I finally gave in and got the epidural. Within ten minutes, they said I was ready to push! Ten minutes!!

Thirty-two hours of active, hard labor and I was at a standstill. But ten minutes after that epirdural kicked in and BAM! Let’s do this!!!
Why? Because the pain was so intense, I fought it with all my might. I didn’t mean to…I tried all the tips and tricks I had heard about in birthing classes. But, clearly, I wasn’t practicing those strategies effectively. The pain was so strong, I tensed my body with every contraction, to the point that I was the one getting in the way of progressing so that I could deliver my baby.
How often do we do this to manage life’s circumstances? The labor pains come and instead of leaning into them and walking through the storm, we do anything and everything to shield ourselves from it? Clench our fists, close out eyes, ignore or pretend “it” doesn’t exist.
And it isn’t always the tough stuff that we get in the way of. Sometimes, we long for the good…the job, the relationship, the new circumstance. We long for it so much so, we get in the way of God orchestrating things in the best way possible. We think we know better or we just aren’t patient enough.
I don’t know about you, but I believe some of the sweetest experiences are the ones that take time. They require patience, a whole lot of wondering and a great deal of submission.
They force you to submit to The Long Game.
If I can step back and objectively consider TLG, I love it. I do quite love the tension, the waiting, the wondering, the tiny rewards or bits of hope exposed along the way.
But in the middle of it??
When you’re not sure…
When you are *actually* being patient…
When you have no clue how things will turn out…??
AAAARG!!
Lord, can you just give me SOME sort of assurance that I will, indeed, love the result?
Actually, yes:
• James 1:12 — Those who remain faithful under trial will receive “the life which God has promised”.
• Galatians 6:9 — At the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
• 1 Corinthians 15:58 — Your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
• Colossians 3:23-24 — Work heartily for the Lord, “knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward”.
• 2 Chronicles 15:7 — Your work shall be rewarded.
• Romans 8:28 — God works all things together for good for those who love him.
• James 5:7-8 — Be patient like a farmer waiting for the harvest.
God can absolutely make things happen in a heartbeat. But there is so much goodness to be found when we must endure, walking by faith, in true submission to His sovereign hand, and not by sight.
We like immediate results. But is it as satisfying to get what you want – when you want it – every. single. time?
Think about fasting.
I recently did a 5-Day Fast… no breakfast or lunch, just dinner. When we fast from food, the goal is to turn from relying on physical comfort and instead seek God more deeply – humbly focusing on him, expressing dependence, and aligning our hearts with His will.
A little peek into me:
I love breakfast.
I love brunch.
I love bacon.
I love butter on sourdough toast.
So. I knew if I was going to fast, choosing to skip breakfast over dinner was a greater sacrifice and that’s what I wanted. Skipping breakfast AND lunch definitely put me in that posture of prayer because my body was physically reminding me to do so with each hour that passed!
Did my prayer time increase? Yep.
Was my focus on the Lord sharpened? Yep.
Did I get all the answers I was seeking? Mmmno.
There are definitely things in progress but I felt a sense of peace and calm as I drew close to the Lord.
Beyond that, I was reminded of how sweet the reward of TLG can be on a simple level.
When I fasted from two meals, I was deprived of all the tastes and sensations enjoyed when eating…
The taste of a good cup of coffee as well as the warmth and pick me up that brings.
The crunch of the toasty edge of a piece of sourdough toast with Kerrygold butter on every millimeter. (All y’all who haphazardly spread a touch of butter here and there on a waiting piece of sourdough..? That’s criminal. Every nook and cranny should be buttered, my friend…)
The slight tease of saltiness mingling together with the sweetness of a dark chocolate salted caramel??? Oh my goodness.

I enjoy all of those things and more!!!
But.
When I chose to fast for five days, what I found is ALL of those pleasures and joys that I normally experience from a meal were heightened after going twenty-four hours without.
Salt was a little bit saltier.
Sugar made my mouth water just a bit more.
The crunch of anything was all the more satisfying. (I like crunchy things…)
Savory things were amazing! And I didn’t feel like I wanted to devour whatever was in front of me because I was hungry. Rather, everything was so much more satisfying, I simply wanted to slow down and enjoy.
That’s what happens when we submit to The Long Game.
You may feel like you are being deprived. You may want to push the fast forward button or skip ahead to see how a chapter ends. But the reality is, if you can choose to lean into the wait…
…the pain..
…the confusion..
…the wondering..
…the longing..
…the frustration.
If you can just trust.
Eventually, you will reap the harvest!! And that harvest will be all the more sweet because of the waiting and the wondering and the hoping.
After all those hours fighting the pains of labor, I finally gave in to the epidural. Ten minutes later, I was told to start pushing and two hours later I held in my arms the most beautiful, precious and perfect baby girl! The epidural allowed my body to do what it was designed to do and the outcome was a reward that was beyond anything I could have hoped for or imagined.
God’s design is that we trust in, submit to and rely on Him. When we step aside and hand over the reins, things can happen in the twinkle of an eye. OR…we wait. But we get to wait with hope and expectation; a confident, unwavering anticipation of God’s promises because He is faithful.
Fighting the process doesn’t get us to God’s desired outcome and given the choice, I can PROMISE you are going to want to choose God’s outcome over your own.
What does this season look like for you?
Is it a season of waiting? Heartache? Frustration? Tension? Hope? Anticipation? Expectancy?
Instead of asking God for exactly what you want, try asking Him to prepare you for what He has in store.
This season – no matter what it looks like for you – is a time of preparing and positioning for what is to come. If you knew you were about to ___________ (get a new job, start a new relationship, end a current situationship, enter into a time of mourning OR rejoicing), wouldn’t you want to be prepared?
As you endure/enjoy/submit to The Long Game, remember God is not teasing you in the tension or forgetting you in what feels like silence; He is preparing you for what He’s already prepared for you!! That’s exciting!
Instead of focusing on the exact outcome you want, ask Him to shape your heart, your character, and your faith for whatever lies ahead. God is faithful!! When the harvest finally comes, you won’t just love the result—you’ll see that every contraction, every hunger pang, every slow, aching day of waiting was part of His careful, loving preparation for a story far better than the one you would have written on your own.
Remember: no wasted ink…when the pen is in the hand of the Creator.
